The Montenegrin part of the lake (40 000 ha) was proclaimed a national park in 1983. Its size of 391 km2 makes it the biggest lake of the Balkans Peninsula. Skadar Lake is widely famous for all the richness of flora and fauna, with more than 100 very rare or endangered species. With almost 1000 types of algae and several hundred bird species, among them the pelican is a trademark of the National Park that makes Skadar Lake one of the most popular plant and animal habitats.
